Fhatuwani Mukheli (b. 1985, Soweto) is a South African visual artist, working as a painter, photographer, and film director based in Johannesburg, South Africa. His creative path began at age seven when his father painted a portrait of him and his twin brother, Justice. Deeply inspired by his childhood and the strength of his mother, Mukheli’s contemporary art often centers on the relationship between parent and child, blending acrylic paint, charcoal, fine liner, and spray paint. Because he believes in the healing power of art, he creates emotionally resonant works that offer space for reflection and connection.
While working as an art director in advertising, he became aware of the misrepresentation of Black identity in media. As a response, he co-founded the creative collective I See A Different You, which used photography to reframe African culture through a lens of beauty, dignity, and resilience – evolving from Soweto street portraits into globally recognized exhibitions and campaigns. His work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Investec Cape Town Art Fair, and MOAD Museum of African Design. He also collaborates with global brands such as Diesel, Scotch & Soda and RedBull.
